Rhythmic improvisation with a modular synth - 7 août 2023
credits
released August 8, 2023
The aim of these Granada experiments with a modular synthesizer is to imagine a configuration of modules capable of creating improvised percussion that can play along with melodic improvisation from a Sinfonion module and other quantizers.
These two experiments last around five minutes, in order to perceive the potential for variability over a medium length of time. Like module training.
The modules used are linked in such a way that maximum uncertainty drives these improvisations.
The basic clock comes from a Yamaha RM1x. It is sent to a MIDI to CV qMI2 interface.
Percussion is driven by a Pithoprakta and a chain composed of the Erfurt and Lipsk pair, whose inputs are triggered by a Jam Jam whose inputs are triggered by a Missed Opportunities whose inputs are triggered by chance and a smoothly undulating Shuffle Grid. Resets here and there. Variations in tempo and sound events are modulated by LFOs. Drum velocities are animated by the Pithoprakta's CV out. Cymbals don't yet benefit from velocity variations, so these experiments are a work in progress.
At times, a metronomic kick brings the whole thing together in a peremptory manner, so as to perceive the reliability of the rhythms over time.
Sounds come from Yamaha RM1x and Motif Rack XS via M-217 interfaces for fixed pitches/gates and CV Thing for selectable pitches/gates.
